Mariah Dempsey, RN

Job Title: Community Health Care Manager

Community: Arlee

Why do you choose to be a nurse?

I choose to be a community health nurse because it provides the opportunity to work with a population and build long-term relationships human beings rather than rapport over a few days in the hospital with a room number. I love that community health focuses on prevention and education. My hope is to empower individuals with the knowledge and resources to better manage their own health and that of their families. I want to feel like my work is meaningful, that I make a difference; Community health nursing provides the opportunity to serve, advocate, learn from a variety of individuals.

Job Title: Community Health Nurse, Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator

Communities: Arlee, Evaro, Ravalli, Dixon

Why do you choose to be a Nurse?

When I was a little girl, I spent a lot of time visiting my grandma and grandpa in the hospital. I watched how the nurses took care of my loved ones with such care and compassion. I have always wanted to take care of others, especially people that live in my community and nursing seemed to be the best way that I could do that. While growing up, I had the advantage of being able to work with Barb Plouffe and Kathy Salois, Public Health Nurses at Tribal Health during my summer breaks in high school and college. I learned so much working with Barb and Kathy during the summers, I knew that Public Health/Community Health Nursing was what I wanted to do. I have worked as a Public Health/Community Health Nurse for Tribal Health for over 22 years.

Your favorite part of nursing?

My favorite part of nursing is taking care of people or communities in need. I love Community Health Nursing because it allows me the freedom to spend the time that I need to help my clients, to visit with the elders and really get to know what their concerns are. Protecting the health and well-being of our community is very important to me. I have been working as the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for many years and although this work is very tiring, especially during the pandemic, it ensures that I do not get bored with my job. Something new and exciting every day.
